Questions

Is the quote really free?

Yes. Every quote is free and no obligation. It starts with a full assessment of what the job needs, then a detailed written quote that costs materials and labour separately, with a detailed timetable so you can plan.

How much does a new roof cost?

The price depends on the size and pitch of the roof, the tiles or slates you choose, the scaffold access and what the survey finds under the old covering. Our new roof cost guide explains each factor, and a free survey gives you a written figure for your house.

Will you beat another roofer's quote?

Yes. We promise to beat any written quote. Send it over or hand it over at the survey, and we come in under it.

What does the 20 year guarantee cover?

All work is backed with a 20 year written guarantee, from a single repair to a complete new roof. The paperwork is issued when the job is complete. Read the detail on the guarantee page.

Are you insured?

Yes. Doyle Homes is fully insured, and we carry out a thorough risk assessment before every job.

Will you push a new roof when a repair would do?

No. We quote you your options in simple terms, with the most cost effective one first. If a repair solves the problem, a repair is what we quote. Customers say in their reviews that the survey was thorough and that nobody pressured them to decide.

How do I find where my roof is leaking?

Water travels, so the stain on your ceiling is rarely under the hole. Slipped or cracked tiles, split lead flashing at a chimney or wall, a worn valley, a blocked gutter and a split in a flat roof covering are the usual sources. A survey on the roof finds the real one.

How fast can you attend a leak?

Call 01582 807949. Reviews on TrustATrader describe Hugh turning up the next day to find a leak, and a team attending within 24 hours with emergency scaffolding in place to make the roof safe. See emergency roof repairs for storm damage, leaks and missing tiles.

Can you replace a few tiles or ridge tiles without re-roofing?

Yes. Slipped, cracked and missing tiles and ridge tiles are fixed as repairs, and customers have written about ridge tiles replaced after a storm. Find out more on our roof repairs page.

Do you repair flat roofs?

Yes. We repair and renew flat roofs of any size in felt, EPDM, fibreglass and stone chip. If the roof is past repair we explain why and quote the replacement. See flat roofing.

Can you fix a leaking chimney?

Yes. Chimney leaks come from failed flashing, crumbling pointing or damaged brickwork, and we repair all three. See chimney repairs.

What is lead flashing?

Lead flashing is the strip of lead that seals the joint where a roof meets a chimney, wall or dormer. When it splits or lifts, water gets in at the junction, which is why leaks show up beside chimneys. Replacing it is a core part of our lead work.

Do you offer roof inspections?

Yes. A roof inspection is a no obligation check: one of our team arranges a visit at a convenient time and surveys your property. See roof inspections if you want a roof checked before the winter.

How long does a new roof last?

A concrete tile roof lasts around 50 to 60 years, clay tiles 60 years and more, natural slate 75 to 100 years, a felt flat roof 15 to 25 years and EPDM or fibreglass 25 years and more. Good installation and ventilation decide whether a roof reaches those figures, and all our work carries a 20 year written guarantee.

Do I need planning permission for a new roof?

Replacing a roof like for like does not need planning permission. Listed buildings need consent first, and conservation areas can restrict changes to materials or the shape of the roof. A full re-roof is also covered by building regulations, so insulation and ventilation standards apply to the new work. We cover what applies to your house at the survey.

How long does a re-roof take?

Reviews describe whole roofs stripped, re-lined and finished within about a week of the scaffold going up, and a flat roof with new ridge tiles and gutters done in a day and a half. Your quote comes with a detailed timetable, so you know the dates before work starts.

Do you need scaffolding?

For most roof work, yes. Scaffolding makes the job safe and lets the roofers work properly. Customers write about scaffolding going up within a day or a few days of agreeing the price.

Should I choose slate or tiles?

Natural slate is the traditional choice on older homes and gives the longest life. Concrete tiles suit most other houses and cost less than slate. We explain the options for your house in simple terms. See slate roofing and tiled roofing.

What is breathable membrane and do I need it?

Breathable membrane sits under the battens and tiles as a second line of defence against wind-driven rain while letting moisture out of the loft. It is part of a re-roof done properly, and you can see it going on beneath the battens in our roofing projects.

Do you replace fascias, soffits and guttering?

Yes. We replace, renew and install uPVC fascias, soffits and guttering on domestic and commercial properties, in styles and colours to match the existing design. See fascias and soffits and guttering.

Do you do building work and damp proofing?

Yes. We cover all aspects of roofing, building and damp proofing. Larger building projects run from design to completion with a trusted network of surveyors, architects, plumbers and electricians. See building work and damp proofing.

Do you clean roofs and remove moss?

Yes. We clean roofs and remove moss, and we can repair or replace anything the cleaning uncovers. See roof cleaning and moss removal.

Do you work on commercial roofs?

Yes. We roof both domestic and commercial properties. See commercial roofing.

Which areas do you cover?

We work across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and North London from our office in Dunstable. See every town on the areas we cover page.

What happens after I ask for a quote?

Hugh or one of the team calls you back to find out what the roof is doing. A visit is arranged at a convenient time, we survey the property, and you receive a detailed written quote and timetable. There is no obligation at any stage.

Will you leave my property tidy?

Yes. Materials are stored neatly and safely on site, and we leave the site tidy and remove all waste. Customers mention the tidiness in their reviews.

What if I have a problem after the work?

Call 01582 807949. If you have cause for concern, we make sure any issue is fully rectified, and all work is backed with a 20 year written guarantee.
