Roofers in Enfield: Victorian streets, 1930s semis and the open Chase

Roofers in Enfield: finished brown tile roof with a neat valley

Enfield packs every kind of London roof into one borough. The market town around Enfield Town, chartered in 1303, still has houses on Gentleman's Row that date from the 16th to the 18th century. Around it sit Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas, and Bush Hill Park is a settled, mostly owner-occupied suburb. North and west the old royal hunting ground of Enfield Chase leaves the ground open, so roofs on the edge of town meet the wind with nothing in front of them. On those exposed edges we fit dry verge and ridge systems, so ridges and verges are held by fixings, not mortar alone, and stay put in a gale.

South of the town the houses change again. Southgate and Winchmore Hill are mostly 1930s and earlier, and the east side by the Lee Valley, Ponders End and Enfield Lock, is a mix of Victorian terraces, industrial buildings and later estates. Every one of those periods fails in a different way, and we have repaired all of them.

Conservation areas: Bush Hill Park, Southgate Green, Winchmore Hill and Forty Hill

Enfield Council protects its older neighbourhoods hard. Bush Hill Park, Southgate Green, Winchmore Hill, Forty Hill and Enfield Lock are all conservation areas, and a 2006 Article 4 direction covers them along with other Enfield areas. Forty Hill has Forty Hall, built on the site of the Tudor Elsyng Palace, and the cottages around it are some of the oldest in the borough.

That affects the roof. If your house sits in one of these areas, tiles, slates, chimneys and the front slope are not a free-for-all. We quote in matching materials, keep the proportions of the original, and tell you at the survey whether the Article 4 direction means a planning application. Ask us before you order anything online.

Southgate and Winchmore Hill: what the 1930s left behind

New interlocking tiles being laid over breathable membrane on a pitched roof

Southgate N14 filled up fast. The Piccadilly line reached it in 1933 and the North Circular opened the same year, and by 1939 the hilly old estates at Walker, Osidge and Monkfrith were covered in largish semi-detached houses. Charles Holden's Grade II* Southgate station still stands at the centre, with Grovelands Park and its 92 acres to the west. The roads climb and fall across the old estates, so wind and driving rain reach the slopes from every side.

Those semis have hipped roofs, front bays with their own pitched covers, and chimneys on the flanks. After ninety winters the ridge mortar has cracked, the felt under the tiles has failed and the lead trays behind the stacks have lifted. Winchmore Hill N21 adds Victorian villas and its own conservation area, where the same jobs call for slate or clay to match.

If you want roofers in Southgate or Winchmore Hill, we survey from the top and give you a detailed written quote.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Bush Hill Park and Enfield Town

Welsh slate, lead valleys and nail sickness

Terraces from the 1880s to the 1910s carry Welsh slate on lead valleys, with party-wall flashings between neighbours. The iron nails that hold the slates rust through, so slates slip one at a time, a condition roofers call nail sickness. Good roofers in Enfield start by checking for it, because patching one slate on a tired slope buys a few weeks, not years.

Bays, dormers and rear extensions

Most terraces have a bay roof at the front and a flat-roofed kitchen or bathroom extension at the back. Both are lead or felt, and both leak at the joint with the main wall. We renew the lead, re-lay the felt or fit EPDM rubber roofing, and tie it into the slates properly.

Roof repairs in Enfield we are called for most

Each of these has its own page, from roof repairs and flat roofing to fascias and soffits and guttering. Our London roof repairs page covers the leaks we trace across the whole of North London.

  • Slipped, cracked and missing tiles after wind, found and replaced like for like
  • Ridge and hip tiles that have lost their bedding, re-bedded or fitted dry
  • Lead flashings, valleys and soakers that let water behind a chimney
  • Felt flat roofs on kitchen extensions that have started to pond and leak
  • Gutters, fascias and soffits rotted by years of overflow
  • Full re-roofs when the battens and felt have perished
  • Garage and outbuilding roofs, felt, fibreglass or tile

Ponders End, Enfield Lock and the east side

The Lee Valley side of Enfield tells a different story. Enfield Lock grew around the Royal Small Arms Factory, and more than half of its homes are rented. Ponders End has Wright's Flour Mill, the oldest running industrial building in Enfield. That means terraces, flats above shops, landlords and managing agents as well as owner-occupiers.

Landlords and agents get what they need: photographs, a written itemised quote and a clean handover. We also handle commercial roofing on units and workshops around EN3, so a mixed property gets one team and one guarantee.

Getting to Enfield, parking and scaffolding

The office is at 59 Union Street, Dunstable, about 30 miles away by the M1 and M25. Enfield is an easy run for us, and your survey is a proper visit, not a guess from a photo. Controlled parking zones cover Enfield Town, Southgate and the stations, and terraces facing the pavement need a scaffold licence. Any third party charges are listed in your written quote, and a risk assessment comes before every job.

One customer wrote that we attended within 24 hours of contact and had emergency scaffolding up within a further 48. That is the standard we work to.

Written price, written guarantee

Every Enfield quote is free, with no obligation. We put the price in writing, split between materials and labour, and we promise to beat any written quote you hold. All work is backed with a 20 year written guarantee, and we are fully insured and a family business.

Next door, we cover roofers in Barnet, Potters Bar and Welwyn Garden City. See our guarantee, the whole North London area, or ask for your free quote. For roofers in Enfield who put the price and the guarantee in writing, that is the page to start from.

I recently hired this roofing contractor for a full roof replacement, and I couldn't be happier with the results. From start to finish, the team was professional, knowledgeable, and efficient. They provided me with regular updates on the progress of the project, and the final product was of excellent quality. I highly recommend this company for any roofing needs.
