Gutter repair that stops the leak, not just the drip

New eaves and gutter line seen from the scaffold during gutter replacement

A gutter does one job: it carries water off the roof edge and away from your walls. When it stops doing that, the water goes down the brickwork, into the fascia and soffit, and eventually into the ground around your foundations. Fixing the drip with a dab of sealant buys you a week. We find why it failed and fix that.

Over 25 years' experience on roofs tells us that the visible leak is rarely the whole problem. A joint opens because the run has sagged. The run sags because the brackets have lost their grip on a soft fascia. We follow the chain back to the first failure and put it right.

The faults we repair

Gutters fail in a handful of ways. Each has a different repair, which is why we look before we quote.

Leaking joints and cracked unions

uPVC gutters are joined with union brackets that hold a rubber seal. The seal hardens and splits, and the bracket cracks when the gutter moves in hot and cold weather. We replace the seal and bracket, not just smear sealant over the top. One reviewer had a gutter joint come apart in hot weather after a job and Hugh came out promptly to fix it.

Sagging runs and failed brackets

A gutter has to fall gently towards its outlet. When brackets pull loose or the fascia behind them has rotted, the fall disappears and water sits in the middle of the run. We re-hang the gutter on new brackets at close centres, fixed to sound timber, and reset the fall.

Blocked outlets and overflowing gutters

Leaves, moss from the roof and granules and grit from old concrete tiles settle at the outlet and block the downpipe. The gutter fills, overflows at the front edge and soaks the wall below. We clear and flush every outlet and downpipe, and fit larger outlets where the old ones were too small.

Cracked, split and brittle gutters

Cast iron cracks at the joints and rusts through from the inside. Old plastic goes brittle and chalky in sunlight. When the material itself has failed, a repair is wasted money, and we say so and quote the replacement.

Gutter repair or full replacement: how we decide

If the fault is one leaking joint on a sound run, repair it. If the gutters are 20 years old, brittle or leaking in several places, replacing them costs less than a string of call-outs. The same applies if the fascia is being renewed, because the gutters have to come off anyway.

We give you both prices where both make sense. Our fascias and soffits team can renew the boards in the same visit, so the access is shared and the finished roofline matches.

Gutter replacement: profiles, sizes and colours

We fit half-round, square and deep-flow uPVC guttering with matching downpipes, in black, white and brown. Half-round suits older and period houses. Square and deep-flow profiles carry more water, which helps on larger roofs and long runs. We size the gutter and outlets to the roof area draining into them, rather than fitting the same standard run on every house.

Downpipes go where the water needs to leave the roof, not where the old pipe happened to be. One reviewer had a broken downpipe in an awkward corner that was damaging the brickwork: the pipe was moved to a better position, the guttering replaced and the brickwork repointed in the same visit, and they report all is well after heavy rain.

What a failed gutter does to your house

Water running down a wall soaks the brick and mortar, and the mortar crumbles first. Damp patches appear inside on the same wall. A gutter that has overflowed for years rots the fascia and the rafter ends behind it, and can undermine the ground beside your foundations.

If you already have damp patches near an outside wall, we check the gutters and downpipes first, since a leaking joint is a more common cause than anything inside the house. Where the brickwork needs attention after gutter repair, our damp proofing work picks up from there.

Gutter clearing and cleaning

If your gutters are sound but full, we clear them out by hand, flush the outlets and check each downpipe runs free. We bag the debris and take it away, so it does not end up in your garden. After clearing, we run water along the length of the gutter to show the fall is working.

Moss on the roof falls into the gutter every time it rains. If your roof is growing moss, pair the clearing with roof cleaning and moss removal so the gutters stay clear.

Guttering across Luton, Dunstable and nearby towns

We work from Dunstable across Luton, Harpenden, Hitchin, Watford and the wider area. Many houses here have 1930s and post-war guttering that has outlived its brackets, and Victorian terraces with cast iron that has rusted through.

Signs you need us

  • Water running down the wall behind the gutter in rain
  • Green or black staining on brickwork under a joint or outlet
  • Gutter sagging in the middle, or standing water left in it after rain
  • Plants, moss or seedlings growing out of the gutter
  • Water pouring over the front edge instead of reaching the downpipe
  • A downpipe that has pulled away from the wall or is splashing at the base

We had a broken down pipe in a very awkward area which was causing damage to brickwork. Robert fitted a new down pipe to a more convenient place, replaced guttering and some bricks as well as re-pointing where needed. We've had heavy rain since, and all is well. Very good experience with workers and scaffolders - all very friendly and made sure area was clean after the job was finished. Will use again, and would recommend.

I had invited them to inspect my roof and guttering. They provided me with information and photographs of the work that was required. The quote was good value. When they undertook the work, it was very professional, with further photographs to allow me to inspect the work undertaken and completed. Happy to recommend.

We had our downpipes and guttering replaced today, just in time for heavy rain expected tonight. The job was done quickly, and for an affordable price. The owner, Hugh, checked on the work himself. He would certainly be our first choice if we decide to have more extensive renovations done.

Questions

Guttering questions

How much does gutter repair cost?

It depends on how many joints, brackets and outlets need work and how high the access has to be. You get a free, detailed quote with labour and materials split out, and we will beat any written quote you already hold.

Can you repair a leaking gutter joint without replacing the gutter?

Yes, when the gutter itself is sound. We replace the seal and the union bracket, which fixes the leak properly. If the gutter is brittle or leaking in several places, we tell you replacement is the better value.

Why does my gutter overflow when it rains?

Either the outlet is blocked, the gutter has lost its fall, or it is too small for the roof area feeding it. We clear the outlet, re-hang the run to the right fall, and fit larger outlets or a deeper profile where needed.

Do you replace the fascia and soffit as well?

Yes. We renew fascias, soffits and gutters in one visit, so you pay for one lot of access and the whole roofline matches.

Do you clear gutters?

Yes. We clear blocked gutters, outlets and downpipes, take the debris away, and flush the run to prove the water leaves freely.

Is guttering work guaranteed?
